چکیده
During the last half century, the use of composite materials and structures has been increasing within many industries: aerospace, automotive, civil, marine, and railway engineering, wind power generation, and sporting goods, to name a few. There is, however, only a small open literature base concerning adhesively bonded composite repairs, primarily originating from within the aerospace industry. Moreover, little work has been done toward the optimization of repairs on marine composite structures, despite a growing number of such applications. Few decision-making procedures leading to the undertaking of composite repairs have been articulated. Among these, the selection of the most appropriate nondestructive evaluation (NDE) scheme is acknowledged as an important aspect in determining the extent and the type of repair, and ultimately assessing its quality. Such selections of NDE technique(s) currently appear to be largely based upon qualitative engineering judgment, which is likely to lead to long-term sub-optimal remedies. An open literature review of various repair schemes and the parameters that affect their mechanical properties is undertaken, and conclusions on adhesively bonded composite repairs for marine applications are summarized. Particular attention is given to the effects on the repaired composite of the mechanical and geometric properties of the adhesive and patch materials, fabrication procedures, as well as the environmental and loading conditions in which the repair is expected to function. It is thusly concluded that among the essential parameters for cost and reliability optimization of composite marine repairs are the following: NDE of the region under consideration for repair; adhesive thickness and spew fillet size; membrane and flexural stiffness, overlap length, scarf angle, shape, fiber orientation percentage, and tapering of the repair patch; in-plane bondline length; out-of-plane curvature of the substrate; repair curing and subsequent operating temperature; and moisture absorption. Accordingly, recommendations for further studies are based on these summaries and conclusions.

Analytical Solution of Stress Field in Adhesively Bonded Composite Single-Lap Joints Under Mechanical Loadings
In this paper, considering an adhesively bonded composite single-lap joint, a novel approach is presented to predict the peel and shear stress distributions of the adhesive layer for an ASTM standard test sample. In current method, the equilibrium equations are derived using the energy method and based on the Timoshenko’s beam theory. Two solution procedures then are discussed, one of which rep...
متن کاملWave Propagation and Dispersion of Lamb Waves in Adhesively-bonded Structures
With an increasing use of adhesively bonded joints in the industry, there is a correspondingly growing need for the inspection of adhered joints. It is necessary to detect defects in the adhesively bonded materials such as voids inclusions, chemical miscure of the adhesive, or delaminations of the bonded layers. In order to use an ultrasonic technique to detect these defects, a thorough underst...

In this study, shear and peel stress distributions in the viscoelastic adhesive layer of a single-lap joint (SLJ) with functionally graded (FG) adherends are investigated. The study focuses on the effect of different adherend profiles and material composition on the time-dependent stress concentration/distribution in balanced and unbalanced SLJs. For this purpose, the Reddy model is applied to ...

This work reports on the experimental and numerical study of the bending behaviour of two-dimensional adhesively-bonded scarf repairs of carbon-epoxy laminates, bonded with the ductile adhesive Araldite 2015. Scarf angles varying from 2 to 45o were tested. The experimental work performed was used to validate a numerical Finite Element analysis using ABAQUS and a methodology developed by the aut...
متن کاملComputing the Growth of Naturally-occuring Disbonds in Adhesively-bonded Joints
In 2009 the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) introduced a slow growth approach for certifying composite and adhesively-bonded structures. This approach requires that delamination or disbond is slow, stable and predictable under cyclic-fatigue loads. The present paper addresses the challenge of developing a methodology capable of enabling this approach to certification to be implemented....
